59 - Decimal Board of Multiplication
When Dr. Montessori first designed this piece of equipment and commissioned the factory in Italy to produce it, she called it the Frosted Glass Decimal Board.(1) The result was a color-coded glass surface on which a child could write numbers, make large multiplications with decimals, and easily erase them as needed. The board was sold by Gonzagarredi until about the mid-1970s. When the supply ended, it was decided that the product should be discontinued, because the demand was too weak and the production too costly. Through the years, however, AMI training centers such as Bergamo, Italy continued to give the Montessori presentations of the exercises that children could do with this equipment. We decided that a modern laminated version of this color-coded board could be made.

These lessons describe and explain on a step-by-step method how to present pertinent Montessori math materials and exercises to children from ages 6 to 9. The information provided with these notes is not intended to be a substitute for live instruction offered by a formal Montessori teacher preparation course. For the experienced Montessori teacher, these notes will serve well as enriching professional insights; for the beginner, they will lay a solid foundation for understanding the Montessori Method and for practicing many of its principles and techniques in the role of teacher-assistant or private home-teacher. Formal courses for the C.M.E. certification program have been discontinued and are no longer offered by The Albanesi Educational Center.
