By organizing language exercises into groups or families of words, the teacher introduces the elementary students to the idea that our spoken language is built upon words that are created by the combination of two or more words or parts of words. For this reason, Dr. Montessori thought of developing manipulative game-like activities taken from Italian elementary textbooks to teach compound words and words formed by prefixes and suffixes.
